Operation VIGILANT PORT Tests Multi-agency Response to Terrorism/Hostage Scenario
WHAT: Broward County's Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the Broward Sheriff's Office will host a multi-agency exercise to practice emergency response skills in a mock terrorist attack with hostages. The first part of the exercise will take place in a cruise terminal and aboard a ship at Port Everglades, with armed terrorists, hostage and hazardous materials scenarios. The second part of the exercise will take place at the Airport in the afternoon and will involve an aircraft takeover.
WHEN: Thursday, April 16, 2015. Media should arrive at 9:30AM and be in place by 10AM. Upon request, media may be escorted to the Airport for the second part of the drill.
WHERE: Port Everglades Cruise Terminal 18, 1901 SE 32nd St., Hollywood, FL, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
PARKING: Media will be directed to parking at Cruise Terminal 18. Arrangements will be made for news trucks to broadcast live at noon from the dock.
SECURITY: Be prepared to show government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport, at the security checkpoints into the Port.
WHY: Port Everglades applied for and received a $100,000 Port Security Grant through FEMA for a multi-agency emergency response exercise to drill incident plans and procedures.
