BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Port Everglades received two Awards of Excellence in Communications from the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) during the trade association’s annual meeting this week. The awards were for the Port Everglades Cruise Guide and for a social media campaign publicizing the Port’s expansion program and its economic benefits. Port Everglades also received an Award of Distinction for its Annual Commerce Report.
“This is a well-deserved honor. Our Cruise Guide is a popular tool for travel agents, and our social media campaign on YouTube had a great impact among residents, port stakeholders and our elected officials to get the word out about our expansion efforts,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive & Port Director Steven Cernak.
An independent panel of 36 Public Relations Society of American judges from the Washington, D.C., area scored communications competition entries in 15 different classifications, ranging from advertisements to websites.
The Port Everglades Cruise Guide is published annually to promote the cruise industry sailing from Port Everglades. The Cruise Guide lists all cruises sailing out of the Port, a photo and description of each of the ships, a ship schedule and provides practical information such as transportation, tipping, parking fees and security regulations. It is supported through advertising.
The goal for the Port Everglades social media campaign was to improve awareness about the Port Everglades Master/Vision Plan and its priority projects through a 7-minute video on YouTube, and to generate a better understanding of how these capital improvements would enhance the Port’s economic impact in the community. The objectives were to engage elected officials, local business leaders and customers in the expansion efforts. Since the social media campaign began in June 2011, the video has received more than 14,000 hits. It has been the focal point of the Port’s overall communications plan to attract attention to the capital improvements at Port Everglades.
As one of South Florida’s leading economic powerhouses, Port Everglades is the gateway for international trade and cruise vacations. Already one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, Port Everglades is also the leading container port in Florida and South Florida’s main seaport for receiving petroleum products including gasoline, jet fuel and alternative fuels. The Port Everglades Department is a self-supporting Enterprise Fund of Broward County government with operating revenues of approximately $143 million in Fiscal Year 2012 (October 1, 2011 through September 30, 2012). It does not rely on local tax dollars for operations. The total value of economic activity at Port Everglades is approximately $26 billion. More than 201,000 Florida jobs are impacted by the Port, including almost 11,700 people who work for companies that provide direct services to Port Everglades.
