Energy Efficiency

In April 2019, the Port completed a ten-year energy-efficient equipment upgrade project (led by Trane South Florida - $4.4 million) in the cruise terminals and office buildings to produce annual reductions of: CO2 - 9.8 million pound; Sulfur Dioxide - 61,101 pounds; Nitrous Dioxide - 17, 091 pounds. The project also resulted in an annual savings of approximately 6,540,825 kilowatt-hours ($45,858 per year) and $773,339 in capital costs.

FPL Clean Energy Plant

On July 16, 2013 FPL demolished its 1960s-era Port Everglades Power Plant and replaced it with a new, more fuel efficient plant. The new FPL facility Environmental Education Center at Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Parkopened on April 11, 2016. Regulated air emissions are estimated to be 90 percent lower; water flow and thermal discharge reduced by approximately 50 percent (from 87,000 gallons per minute); CO2 emissions rate cut in half; velocity reduced from 1.6 to 1; and NOX emissions reduced 85 percent.
