Traffic Alert - U-Turn to Close at Checkpoint 2

Starting on Monday, March 23, Broward County’s Highway Construction & Engineering Div. will temporarily close the U-turn located before the security checkpoint on Spangler Blvd./State Road 84. During this time the U-turn closure will be evaluated to see if it improves traffic flow coming from the Convention Center Connector/westbound Spangler Blvd. If successful, the U-turn will be permanently closed to allow for the lengthening of the left turn lanes from westbound Spangler Blvd. to southbound US 1.

Bulkhead Replacement Project

Bulkhead Replacement ConstructionPort Everglades is replacing the bulkheads and seawalls at several locations throughout the port and inlet, including the North Entrance Channel (NEC) seawall. The NEC seawalls and bulkheads were constructed in the 1950s and must be replaced to protect County property located on the north side of the port’s entry channel for the safe navigation of the waterway for all marine traffic including cargo ships, cruise ships and energy vessels.

Engineers have designed the new wall like the existing wall surface, but it will be deeper and stronger to accommodate the planned deepening of the entrance channel and improve wall stability. The new wall, which is expected to last 75 years or more, will be installed a few feet outside the existing wall and the space between the walls will be filled.

Construction is underway for Phase 1 of the project. Berth 1 was completed in May 2025. Berths 2 and 3 are expected to be available for cruise ship use in November 2025 and substantially completed in the first quarter of 2026.

Who is paying for the project?

The managing general contractor has estimated the project to cost $152 million. The construction cost will be paid through revenue generated from fees that Port Everglades collects from its cruise, cargo, energy, and real estate customers.

Port Everglades is a self-supporting Enterprise Fund of Broward County and does not rely on local property tax dollars for capital improvements or to operate.
