Traffic Alert - U-Turn to Close at Checkpoint 2

Starting on Monday, March 23, Broward County’s Highway Construction & Engineering Div. will temporarily close the U-turn located before the security checkpoint on Spangler Blvd./State Road 84. During this time the U-turn closure will be evaluated to see if it improves traffic flow coming from the Convention Center Connector/westbound Spangler Blvd. If successful, the U-turn will be permanently closed to allow for the lengthening of the left turn lanes from westbound Spangler Blvd. to southbound US 1.

RE:  U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) FY 2026 Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) Grant Application Support Letter for Port Everglades’ Slip 1 Expansion Project

Dear Secretary Duffy:

We (Company name here) are pleased to submit this letter of support for Broward County’s Port Everglades (PEV) Slip 1 Expansion Project in response to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) Notice of Funding Opportunity.

The Slip 1 Expansion Project will ensure that Port Everglades is able to provide modern state-of-the-industry petroleum infrastructure and increased capacity necessary to fulfill its roles as a nationally significant global gateway. Port Everglades serves as the primary storage and distribution seaport for petroleum products in South Florida, distributing fuel to 12 Florida counties and supplying jet fuel to five international airports. The wider berth configuration of Slip 1 will be able to accommodate larger petroleum tankers and ocean-going barges, resulting in increased safety and efficiency.

In addition to the national, state and regional economic and environmental benefits that will be realized by the Slip 1 Expansion Project, port tenants and stakeholders will directly benefit from this added capacity. The Port’s petroleum facilities are partners in this project, and have joined together to design, construct and finance the land side infrastructure component.

The Slip 1 Expansion Project will benefit my business by (Add your explanation here)

As the third largest state in the U.S., Florida is home to nearly 23.4 million people. The South Florida region is the eighth largest metropolitan area in the U.S., with more than seven million residents. Situated in the heart of the region in the state that serves over 143 million visitors annually, accounting for over $133.6 billion in economic activity.  Approximately one third of transportation fuel consumed in Florida arrives through Port Everglades.

Additionally, the seaport industry is one of the most competitive economic environments in the world, with Florida seaports competing for maritime business with seaports in the U.S., Caribbean, Latin America, and globally. It is critical that Florida’s seaports are positioned and equipped to handle a growing volume of trade to meet consumer needs and to ensure the nation’s surface transportation system is used most efficiently.

The Port is also an economic powerhouse for Broward County. At PEV, the cruise and cargo industries supported over 12,000 direct jobs and generated over $28 billion in business activity annually (FY 2024).

Furthermore, PEV has identified $3.8 billion in capital investments that are needed over the next 20 years to maintain and expand its infrastructure.  However, it will require additional federal investments to meet PEV’s current and future needs. The Slip 1 Expansion Project is a critical element of this capital investment program necessary to serve the burgeoning cruise, cargo and air travel needs of South Florida’s residents, visitors, and business community as the state continues to gain nearly 1,000 new residents daily.

We look forward to continuing our relationship with Broward County’s Port Everglades with the successful completion of this project.

Sincerely,
